Gatling Notes
Proceedings Pushed to Perfect the Company's Title, Many Applications for Sites, A Newspaper, a Hotel, and a Church Soon to be Established - Building Certificates.
George M. Bailey, for the Gatling Town Site Company, yesterday took title to the Harriet Thompson farm of 35 acres at Idlewood. The payment of $3,500 was tendered in gold coin. This is the second farm deeded for the Town Site Company. The contracts for the delivery of the other farms comprising the 1,200 acres bought for the company sell for payments every month until June next, and the Company has money in the bank to meet its January and February payments, which will probably be made before they are due.
Ricker & Wing have about half completed the survey of the entire town site tract at Gatling. Two forces of surveyors are at work, the men boarding at the hotel at North Evans. Each farm will be surveyed by itself, as well as the tract as a whole, and levels are taken at every 500 feet.
Mr. Donald Andrews of Buffalo is making plans for a hotel to be built before spring at Gatling, to cost about $8,000.
Ex-Justice Charles Daniels is now preparing the contract for the transfer from George M. Bailey, trustee, to the Town Site Company of all his right, title and interest in his deeds and contracts for the 3 farms bought in the Townships of Hamburg and Eden.
The Town Site Company has agreed to give to the Layman's Missionary League of Buffalo a lot for an Episcopal chapel at Gatling, the League having made a formal application therefore, and having agreed to begin holding services as soon as the house of worship is ready.
Gatling Weekly News
Mr. Work, formerly editor and proprietor of the "News" at North Tonawanda is preparing to issue a weekly paper to be known as the "Gatling Weekly News", the initial number which will appear within 10 days. The first few numbers of the paper will be printed in Buffalo, but the plant will be removed to Gatling in due time. This is a bona fide newspaper venture, as Mr. Work owns the type and presses necessary and goes into the enterprise of his own volition.
Mr. Bailey reports having received a number of applications from persons who contemplate erecting factories or removing their business to Gatling from other points. Several applications have also been received from persons who desire to "keep store" at Gatling.
