Historic Markers, Monuments and Memorials of Buffalo, New York alphabetical index | geographical index | subject index | return to main page ![]() Title: The Lifeboat Station Description: The Buffalo life-saving station and the headquarters of the U.S. Revenue Marine Bureau's Ninth Life Saving District were established in 1876, beginning operations at the north pier the following spring. The U.S. Life Saving Service became a separate organization in 1878, and the following year lifeboat station no. 5 was relocated to lighthouse land at the foot of the south pier in 1900. The boathouse was rebuilt and moved to this site. The Life Saving Service merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the United States Coast Guard.
