Description: In memoriam Thomas "Tom" Mercer, Jr. Born Jan. 28, 1870. Died Mar. 30, 1941. Chief & president of Western, N.Y. Umpires Ass'n. 1914 to 1941. "Tommy" personified baseball. He made dark days bright. He filled life's score with assists of good cheer. The great umpire called him out while his heart was still young. Unafraid to die, he smiled as he crossed eternity's home plate. Erected by: This memorial is in affectionate remembrance and erected by Western, N.Y. Umpires Ass'n. and a host of friends. Donated to the City of Buffalo - 1942. Location: Cazenovia Park near the Cazenovia Street entrance. Comments: Long missing, the plaque on this marker has recently reappeared (8/2006). |
