This site marks the west end of the canal opened in 1825. It carried products and people between Lake Erie and the Hudson River Two Waterfronts. The convergence of lake and canal made possible the transfer of goods and thus Buffalo's emergence as Queen City of the Lakes. Erected by: Canal Society of N.Y.S. Location: On the Central Wharf near the Commercial Slip. Notes: This is the only marker of this type in Buffalo that has different text on either side. Reinstalled in 2008 after several years in storage. |
